DJ Insight interview

The 30 second intro – Who are you?

I’m DJ Insight. Child of the rave era. Original junglist. Longtime radio DJ and producer. I fell in love with the music and the vibe after getting hold of a Helter Skelter tape of DJ Easygroove in ’93. To this day I remain faithful to Technics but had had to branch out into the world of digital for reasons of space and cash and my ageing shoulders. Early musical influences come from the 80s, electro, reggae, hip hop and trip hop/downtempo but nothing beats rave music as you’ll hear on my shows which include acid house, old skool hardcore, jungle and drum and bass on Eruption Radio.

Under wraps for now. Watch this space!

What is your home DJ tech set up currently?

Technics 1210s and Pioneer CDJs. Allen & Heath Xone 23 mixer. B&W speakers

What do you most often play out on these days?

Vinyl

What DJ tech did you use in your early days? (We’d love to see some photos!)

Vinyl – hasn’t changed. I have used belt drives but got Technics 1210s as soon as I could afford them!

What’s on the tech shopping list?

Samplers haha!

What’s been your favourite ever gig?

Voodoo Magic Halloween 94

Throughout your career is there a piece of equipment that you have just never got on with?

Some DJ controllers!

From a DJing point of view what three things do you always take to a gig apart from USB and headphones obviously!

Vinyl, business cards, toilet roll! (Editor – Good advice here!)

Can you talk us through your productions? (If any)

I make music which spans different genres that captures my emotions at the time. Just like the music I play out, for me to put a tune out it needs to have soul.

If you still have vinyl at home, how much?

About 3,000 12’s

Outside of DJing and production, what tech do you use at home?

Minirig, Sony over ear headphones for immersing myself in music everywhere, gas bbq, nutribullet, er mocha coffee maker. Is that tech? (Editor – Definitely.)

mixcloud, soundcloud, watsapp, gmail, calm

Eruption radio has a really good app. Better than many “bigger” stations.

Good food.
