DJ Kitchy Interview

The 30 second intro – Who are you?

I’m DJ Kitchy – I life long lover of all dance music who recently kicked off DJing seriously. I play a mix of uplifting house, tech house, trance and techno and often bring in Latin, Brazilian and Afro vibes to my playlist- inspired by the my love of Brazilian and African drumming. (Editor – We love this, mixing up different styles is a great way to carve a niche out)

Please let us know your next gig dates, and release schedule if you have anything coming out soon

10th Feb – Poplar Union (Supernovae) 2nd March – Behind the Bookcase (Star of Kings)

What is your home DJ tech set up currently?

Pioneer XDJ RX3

What do you most often play out on these days?

If I don’t take my RX3 it’s usually Pioneer CDJ 900s and above depending on the set up at the venue

What DJ tech did you use in your early days? (We’d love to see some photos!)

I only fairly recently started, but quickly migrated from the Pioneer DDJ 400 to the RX3

What’s on the tech shopping list?

Turntables (may start with Pioneer then move to Technics) …. will keep to current set up for minimum a year before potentially moving to separates. I may look at investing in a pad controller but will likely start with product like the AKAI MPD218. (Editor – This is a sensible upgrade path)

What’s been your favourite ever gig?

A wedding in Poland last year (main wedding and beach party set) which was amazing and really gave me the buzz for playing live. I also played a festival earlier this year (Baque Fest) which was a great experience.

Throughout your career is there a piece of equipment that you have just never got on with?

Not yet! …. but early on my journey in terms of software – Rekordbox can be unreliable on Mac. When it upgrades and loses the ability to connect with Beatport, which has happened twice so far this year!

From a DJing point of view what three things do you always take to a gig apart from USB and headphones obviously!

Laptop for back up if possible, other than that a positive attitude and a change of t-shirt ;)

Can you talk us through your productions? (If any)

I haven’t started producing tracks…. yet!

If you still have vinyl at home, how much?

Not much! Around 80 12” and 100 albums but starting to invest in vinyl again a bit more

Outside of DJing and production, what tech do you use at home?

MacBook Pro, Focusrite (for capturing demos for the bands I also play in) and a Roland TD-11 electronic drum kit

Can you let us know three apps that are essential to you?

Beatport, Rekordbox, GarageBand

What app would you like to spread the word about?

Beatport is been invaluable for discovering and sourcing tracks

What non-music related product can’t you live without?

Peloton (keeps me fit and I often get music inspiration from it when on rides!)

Any DJs or producers that we should watch out for?

Already big but Club Bad label / Mele have a been a big inspiration

Been to any great clubs or events recently?

Not recently but really want to check out Drumsheds! Also looking forward to playing ‘Behind the Bookcase’ / Star of Kings in Kings X

Football team?

Millwall (Editor – Tough call this.)

Book recommendations?

I’ll come back to you on that!

Thanks to Jon for doing this DJ Kitchy interview with DJWORX. He is a great example of taking skills learnt in a live band to the DJ environment. By finding a niche in a short space of time he has played various gigs, a festival and even has his own radio show. Pretty inspirational for aspiring DJs!
