BPM 2012: Virtual DJ 8 Progress Update

BPM 2012: Virtual DJ 8 Progress Update

Virtual DJ is eons old, and has a user base that others can only dream of. And in that time, it has developed some key technologies as well as its fair share of bad press. This is something that the makers, Atomix, wish to address with Virtual DJ 8. And they’re making damned sure the ghosts of the past are exorcised completely.

Scott from Virtual DJ, or SBDJ as the VDJ family will know him as, dropped by the DJWORX base camp to give us a demo of the updated features plus a few others as well. Users will note the coloured waveforms – because of the need to placate existing users gagging for v8 to come along, the prematurely released v7.1 and far better v7.2 included them as a treat for those who are having to wait a little longer than expected.

But it’s some of the other features than have me rather more interested. Some bullet points:

Points of interest

Coloured waveforms throw up some very useful benefits, such as having a much more visual way to see important parts of the playing track. But VDJ8 goes someway further than just creating BPM and adding manual cue points. It’s now possible for the software to auto add “points of interest” i.e. what it considers to be the first beat or the start of a break etc.

Cue Point Commands

I don’t know if this is new or not, but as an advanced feature, this I find to be very interesting. Having defined cue points, it’s possible to attach commands to those cue points. This is achieved via VDJScript, a programming language that allows you to automate VDJ to do things that it and MIDI otherwise couldn’t do. I’m still unsure if these auto trigger actions when reached or if they’re triggered from a button press, but I know I’m going to have fun finding out.

Resizable interface

This is a big leap forward for Virtual DJ. As you’ll see at the start of the clip, the interface is highly responsive with all parts of the interface resizing to suit. One would hope that there will be an element of control in skin creation that defines which elements scale and how.

There’s more going on that just the cherry picking I did above, and you should watch the video to get a little more insight into where Atomix are with the next big update. It’s also an admirable stance to take with not releasing before they were ready to. It would be quite easy to put something out just to keep up appearances and the loyal following happy. But it would also be commercial suicide at a time when Serato just announced their next big update aka Serato DJ, and banking on Traktor being a bugfest is ancient history.

I get the impression that there is more to come in Virtual DJ 8, but it’s not getting shown just yet. Given that the release date looks to be post March 2013, I just don’t see that bug fixing takes 6 months, especially as there’s no retail package as such. Now that Atomix has seen the future roadmap of its rivals, I’d expect some fun time ahead.

The Old Owner
      1. I think the actual layout of the split screen looks great, but there’s no point having it if there’s not something useful in both screens. Just some simple edits that switch between the two cameras would be fine, and then, when there’s actually something to see in both, switch to the split screen. Although I’m no professional video editor so don’t blame me if you try it and it looks crap! :-D

  1. Isn’t VDJ8 going to be available on iOS as well? Seems like that is pretty big news too.
Agree on the split screens – a picture-in-picture layout would be better when two images are required simultaneously I think.

    1. I got some info on iOS and Android apps, but not enough to really talk about it in detail. It would appear to be more about being a remote and having a library on screen rather than being a fully fledged DJ app. More on that when I have it.

  2. I realize the timeline will let you cut the middle of the track for Quick Mixing. But the Cue Scripting has me very interested.
“Having defined cue points, it’s possible to attach commands to those cue points. This is achieved via VDJScript, a programming language that allows you to automate VDJ to do things that it and MIDI otherwise couldn’t do. ”

Will I be able to setup a Cue Point that will seamlessly jump to another Cue point. I’ve been looking for SPLICE in software since Denon had it in the DN-D9000 since 2004. This is my #1 request in SSL http://serato.com/forum/discussion/28236

  3. “and banking on Traktor being a bugfest is ancient history.”

Haha, are you serious? That software is still a terrible joke. I still love the niceties it provides, but when it does so at such a great cost I can’t take the software seriously. Where VDJ lacks in features, it makes up for them in stability and reliability.

    1. I’m 100% serious. I’ve used Traktor since the days of Final Scratch, and it was awful. I can fire it up now and more or less guarantee that it won’t crash. And let’s be frank – even VDJ themselves acknowledge issues with the Mac version, hence taking the time to make sure all bugs are squished and performance is top notch.

You only have to look at the number of world class DJs who use Traktor now to realise that it’s a trusted and reliable software.

    2. Traktor is as close to 100% bug free as any of the DVS systems will be nowadays. I have also used it on and off since it’s early days and it used to be shocking. When i first moved to laptop djing i used Serato as it was solid. That’s now out of window since the updates since v1.9 (last solid version). Been on Traktor again for 2yrs now and it’s amazing. The features it has are spot on nowadays. VDJ will always be in front with some amazing features too but it still is only about 85/90% solid.

  4. Looks like this has taken steps by leaps and bounds since the last time I saw it, (a Youtube-vid on an Expo). Most interesting addition appears to be the much more powerful sampler and the remix engine. It’s nice that they are making it more pretty, but skins are not as important IMHO.

  5. Mark, good work as always. The video was very informative, I like the split screen.

Can anyone give me a good reason why I would not want to jump into VDJ? I am looking at a new DVS system, external mixer, vinyl decks and time code. What I like about VDJ is that I can use any CV and my American Audio DV2 is native to VDJ. To me this is a no brainier, but I would appreciate intelligent comments comparing VDJ with Traktor or scratch live. I’m not talking about “fan boy” comments, the real reason one may be better than the other in terms of performance, ease of use, updates , support and stability.

  6. I purchased VDJ last week and did a 4 hour gig (using Serato CV) and not one audio drop out, skip or hiccup. The software was solid as a rock. Very straight forward and easy to use. I can’t wait for 8 to get here. I have to tweek my scratch settings a bit but once that’s complete no worries, I’m just not familiar with the software as a whole yet. But so far, it’s been great. Plus, I dare you to find better support and customer service. Hands down great software and awesome customer support. I’m running VDJ PRO 7.3, TTX turntables, American Audio DV2 mixer (which is native to VDJ, so it’s a plug and play), M44-7 carts and Serato Control Vinyl. Just a beautiful marriage of equipment.
I’m very pleased with the software.
