From the press release

Decoding the press release: Let’s break down what this announcement means, especially if you’re not well-versed in the technical aspects of rotary mixers.

  1. What is the Headliner R4?
    • As a 4-channel analog rotary mixer, the R4 allows DJs to mix and manipulate audio from different sources, such as turntables, CDJs, or other audio devices, using four channels.
  2. Why does it look special?
    • It promises a warm and high-quality sound, along with precise control features, all with a decent price ($599). This makes it appealing to DJs who want professional-grade equipment without breaking the bank.
  3. Versatility:
    • The mixer will cater to DJs who play different genres of music, including house, techno, and classic funk/soul/disco beats. Its versatility is designed to complement various music styles, making it suitable for a wide range of DJs. Not just 160BPM techno. Popular on the Vega/Vasquez/Tenaglia side of house.

What will I get for my $599?

  • The Headliner R4 is built with genuine ALPS potentiometers. A potentiometer is a knob or control that allows the DJ to precisely adjust various aspects of the sound, allowing minute control over the details of the sound that you don’t get with lien faders.
  • The mixer has four line inputs, three phono inputs (for your turntables), and one microphone input. These are spread across four stereo channels, providing the DJ with flexibility in connecting different audio sources.
  • Each channel comes equipped with gain control with a peak LED (helpful for precisely setting the right volume levels), a 3-band isolator EQ (allowing micro adjustments of bass, midrange, and treble), a headphone cue selector, a channel volume knob, and a filter activation switch. You’ll be smoother than Des Lynam (look him up).

Control the master:

  • The master channel is at the heart of the R4, featuring an analog filter, headphone monitoring, and a comprehensive output control section. This means the DJ can apply different effects and adjustments to the overall sound, monitor it through headphones, and control the final output.
  • The DJ can seamlessly toggle between High Pass / Low Pass Filter modes with Frequency and Resonance controls. It’s like having a set of tools to sculpt an audio landscape (NB – PR speak).
  • The Cue control has a split monitor switch.

Versatile connectivity:

  • The R4 has independent Master and Booth outputs, which means the DJ can connect the mixer to different sound systems or devices easily.
  • Both the Master and Booth outputs have volume controls and balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA connectors
  • Dual LED level meters for the Master output provide precise monitoring and adjustment of audio levels, great for a balanced sound.
  • The mixer also includes a dedicated Record output with unbalanced RCA jacks and an additional microphone input with level control on the front panel. This adds extra flexibility for recording and incorporating a microphone into the mix (@shabbadee)

It looks nice:

  • The R4 looks classic with a robust metal enclosure, and stained wood side panels.
  • It has a modular internal construction and external power supply connected via a locking Mini XLR which we really like.
