VIDEO: DJWORX + DJ CITY + Damien Sirkis talk Rekord Buddy

We offered The Worxlab as a venue for Mojaxx from DJ City and Damien from Next Audio Labs to chat about the long awaited Rekord Buddy v2.

Last weekend saw Damien Sirkis from Next Audio Labs trudge all the way from the USA to the Brighton Music Conference to show off progress with his long awaited update to Rekord Buddy. And part of this trip, he wanted to swing by The Worxlab, and then head even further up north to see Mojaxx at the DJ City HQ in Newcastle. But to do a 600+ mile round trip in one day is madness, so Mojaxx brought DJ City to DJWORX to film a short interview, and so we could all hang out for a while and chat nonsense about the DJ industry.

For those not up to speed, Rekord Buddy aims to ease the suffering of syncing Pioneer’s rekordbox libraries with Traktor. But the more important news is that the upcoming Rekord Buddy 2 will take on the lofty task of being the conduit that syncs your tracks, cues, loops etc between all major DJ software libraries, and in particular Serato DJ and Scratch Live.

This is no easy task by any means, thus Rekord Buddy 2 has been in beta for a very long time. But there’s good news on delivery dates and a Windows version too. Damien runs through some of the features of Rekord Buddy 2, and squirms as Mojaxx doesn’t let him off the hook about the delays.

We had a lot of fun doing this, and was especially nice to hang out with Damien and Mojaxx. Hope you all like this video.

  1. I’ve been waiting for this for so long. I hope we see it by the end of the year. Kudos to DJWorx for setting up this interview and keeping a guy from making an insane trip. That was very kind of you :)

  2. sweet, but how will the libary updates show up in serato dj?.. is there a export to serato function or will they show up LIVE too.. because that would be the ultra killa feature ^^ :-)

  3. Does this have a feature similar to alchimie zinc? so that i can mirror my folder structure in crates and just press sync as i add songs to those folders?

    • Not a the moment. It’s an interesting feature but it would re-enforce the use of static filesystem folders to store information (hierarchy) where Rekord Buddy aims to store all information with the tracks themselves and make the hierarchy dynamic.

I’m curious as to how you use the folder structure outside of the app, i.e. why do you need the track separated into different folders in the first place?

Could help me understand how Rekord Buddy can help.

      • I play dancehall and soca music so one beat can have 5+ songs on it. My file structure for example is Soca > Year > Riddims > Riddim Name. Its a better way of organising my music and the ability to have this mirrored in serato makes life easier instead of me having to manually replicate this folder structure.

        • All that info could be extracted from the track itself and sorted automatically with Rekord Buddy I believe. That way you wouldn’t have a static file structure and could replicate the sorting anywhere with any set of tracks. It wouldn’t matter where the tracks are anymore.

  4. epic! I am hoping this lasts longer than my short lived fascination with Beatport Pro, which had so much potential but turned out to half baked (at least for my workflow). Knowing DM’s passion for perfection, I am thinking it’s going to be killer.

  5. I have a few questions and would be glad if you could answer them:

    1. If I create automatic playlists, will it allow rules like e.g.: “Create playlists for labels, but only if I have more than X release from the label” – I personally have added the label tag to all of my records, but don’t want to have a separate smart playlist for each small label.
    2. Does it allow to create smart playlists based on other rules like “Genre contains string XY” or “Label has name XY”?
    3. Can it also play tracks? If I understood it correctly it can replace my iTunes library with better functions/library management suited to deejays… Basic audio playback would make sense. Controls could be added to the top.
    4. Does it support multiple genres (e.g. if I add “House, Techno” to a release, will it appear to both Electro and Techno playlist)?
    5. As I play a lot of Techno, I have a lot of different sub genres of techno (like acid, industrial, dub, drone). How would you organize it with record buddy? I want the software to recognize them all as techno, but still have the sub genres available in separate playlists.
    6. Please don’t make it to expensive or have a student price like many software companies offer. I totally understand the costs of software development, but I can’t pay too much a month. I’m not professional deejay. :)

    Looking forward to it. Thanks!

    • 1. Not at release but that’s the kind of stuff I want to add too.
      2. Yes
      3. Not at release but planned.
      4. Yes. Multiple Keys and multiple artists/remixers too.
      5. Multiple genre and/or tags with values could do this.
      6. Currently not moving the files. They stay where they are.
      7. Plan is for somewhere around $4-$6 a month. I think if people can’t afford that then they have more important things to worry about than organizing their music.
