There’s certainly no shortage of vinyl floating around in record stores and charity shops right now. And if you’re lucky, you might actually stumble across something you’d actually play and not have to pay an inflated price for. But one man in Brazil seems hell-bent on buying up all the vinyl in the world to boost his already mammoth collection. Say hello to Zero Freitas and his record buying compulsion.
The New York Times tells the story of an obsession, of a child who had amassed 3000 records by the time he finished high school, and at 30 had 30,000 records in his collection. It’s an excellent and compelling read for a Sunday.
don’t hold my hopes up for the bottom ones playing very well
Well, to play them……..
you’d first have to find a way to somehow get to them.
I used to get excited at the thought of doubles. Reading the story, that feels like a total fail now.
Wow! But even with that vast collection, I’d be prepared to bet there are records in my collection that he doesn’t have. That’s the great thing about collecting.
This collection is worth nothing unless every record has been indexed and filed away correctly. I can imagine it being a nightmare trying to remember where he placed that 1 track he bought in 1975 from that local independent, underground record store.
It makes a good news story but it is just mental illness combined with assumed ownership that seems to come with being extremely wealthy. It seems to me that he’s collecting for collecting’s sake. He’s not going to be listening to and enjoying these records as originally intended, just hoarding and cataloging (which is sadly a common phenomenon amongst many high level collectors). I’d prefer it if he was building the world’s biggest public vinyl library or something like that… share them with the world. Also, what happens when Freitas dies?
What’s that trash on the floor? And if you are rich put them in a library or some type of room and decor. Not impressed. I would be more impressed with my 6 year old son making a city in Minecraft. Looks like a hoarder to me.
This picture of Zero Freitas is bogus!
He spread records on top of file boxes if you look close some of the boxes are too small to fit albums.

The LPs are obviously spread out to make the picture more interesting. And the boxes that are too small are 7″ boxes.
I own the rarest Beatles LP ever recorded and I’m offering it up for sale. Looking to contact Mr. Freitas regarding this one of a kind Beatles LP. http://rarebeatlesalbum.com
I contacted Allan Bastos who works along with Zero Freitas. Unless your collection is huge they won’t even purchase them. I’m awaiting on an answer as to how big of collection you must have for them to purchase. Here is his email address: a_bastos@yahoo.com They archive your albums and store them away. http://www.brazilworldmusicmuseum.com/about.php?lang=en Here is the link to what they are trying to accomplish. Hope this helps
Hey thanks. This is one of the rarest LP’s in the world as it’s one of a kind, mythical like the unicorn. Accordingly, I have a very high price on it. He may not be the one who should own it but I’ll try to give him the opportunity is he’s interested after I make contact with him. If anything does happen, I’m sure you’ll read about it. Thanks again.
Does anyone have any contact information on Mr. Freitas? Or any contact to someone who might have contact info to him? Im going to study the preserving of audio and visual media at the royal danish school for preserving and my main interrest is vinyl records. I want to get in touch with Freitas according to his collection. If you can help please contact me at: mcebber@gmail.com. Thanks
