VIDEO: Ko-Matsushima’s Hot Hand and Pioneer routine

Ko-Matsushima blends Pioneer gear, a Hot Hand controller and TouchOSC to make sweet music from Street Fight inspired moves.

Following up on Jared’s excellent Hot Hand review, Ko-Matsushima dropped us a line on Twitter to show us his splendid Soundcheck? vol 6 video. I’m not going to pretend to know exactly what’s happening, but we can see a heap of Pioneer gear, an iPad running TouchOSC and the aforementioned Hot Hand being used to add an extra dimension to the performance.

Hot Hand Pioneer demo

If only the Hot Hand could make the Street Fighter spirit energy moves in the video become real. Here’s hoping some clever lighting company can turn their attention to interactive lighting effects initiated not just by the DJ but involving the DJ too.

  1. ummm.. WTF is going on in this vid? his right hand is doing more work than his left with the product on it i cants tell what the hell is going on until he did the chi ball thing lol

  2. Im usually pretty quick at working out what people are doing in routine vids, but this one for the most part has me stumpted! That is some next level, no hang on the level after that shiz!!!

  3. I don’t know why everybody is so crazy about this Hot Hand technology. For me, it doesn’t bring anything new musically, you’re doing the same thing that you already do with the knobs – the fact that you’re moving your hands like crazy in the air doesn’t make it sound better, nor it adds anything visually.
The guy is good anyway, not because of the Hot Hand stuff, tough.

  4. Really dude? Let’s see him do that with turntables. Get out of here with that trash. I’m all for technology but come on, man. There’s a line that needs to be drawn.

  5. i wasn’t watching properly enough and couldn’t work out how he transitioned from one to the other track. the music isn’t my scene so i can’t be bothered watching again but it looked pretty nifty what he was doing

  6. So this is suppose to impress us?

Some shitty digital scratching and fx lika spidermonkey on acid.

Just because you do this on pioneer gear dont make you a dj, far from it.

I can do this with my iphone, so why dont i, well i respect the arts and craft of deejays, not funky youtubefreaks that want to show of.

      • the point is that this sucks if you cannot comprehend that than im sure you didn’t grew up with real DJs from the days of KDAY..this ain’t DJing, its showing off automated effects that do not require any skill and the music is worse than Juystin Bieber

        • Man, we started using 2 tape decks before turntables became hit in the 80’s. the point is learn to appreciate what others do. it’s not about what intsrumenst we use, it’s about passion for music. move on. turntablsm is not a religion to fight for.

  7. Did it turn into the Serato forum up in here or is everyone that commented just narrow minded and not willing to explore technology and different styles of music! Damn….

    • People feel a need to be negative, and those voices are heard above all others, because they tend to shout. Rest assured that thousands of people have read and watched, and only a tiny percentage decided to comment.

  8. Sometimes there is a need to be negative just to make them feel good about themselves…All I can say is a bunch of losers trying to hate on something that is made out of love for music……This is a good set by the way.

    • when i don’t like somehing im not gonna lie and pretend i love it just o please ignorant ppl like you, that would be faking da funk, if you believe that people who don’t fake the funk are losers then you need to redefine he definion of a loser. If i liked what he did i would have menioned it but i havent heard something as wack as that in a long time and i have been DJing for 20+ years.

      • Your bragging about your 20+ years of experience please….lol
What did those 20+ years taught you?….Self Righteousness….If it’s wack it wouldn’t be featured here at djworx…Mark knows better than that…..About faking the Funk…Show us your set and send it to Mark let’s see if your 20+ years of experience did you good….lol

        • It taught me to seperate the good stuff from the junk, i don’t need any bells or wistles to DJ, just 2 direct drives and a basic mixer. It made me money and a couple of record deals. Since the so called digital age there is hardly anybody making history anymore, the so called nextlevelness doesn’t mean a thing. Hiphop and also House went downhill since the 90s, and so did DJing. Now you see some boring middle aged man pressing buttons on a CDJ when watching a House set while he was breaking records in the golden era.. Nobody is interested anymore. DJ Scratch talked to Flash and asked him how the crowd reacts when he plays digital, he says idk. Then Scratch suggested to play original records and watch the reactions at a gig..ppl seemed to gather around his set and enjoy it better. The point is that nextlevelness in terms of Technology vs DJ is a big joke. The is no nextlevelness, only technology progressed but with a high price tag in the lame DJ current world. You’re an ignorant person so i would suggest not to react to this, thats like telling a FSA nutjob that Allah doesn’t exist.

          • Those 20 years really taught you well….lol Well enough to be an arrogant Dinosaur…..Record deals……lol Why hide on a fake name show your real name and let’s look at those your so called record deals……

  9. I hope all the naysayers are still using VINYL (no DVS) and two channel Radio Shack mixers…

    People
tend to hate on others when they don’t have the ability to do something
themselves. This routine not only showed creativity, but it also shows
that there is always room to do MORE with DJing.

    Obviously this
wasn’t a DMC routine and his cuts aren’t real cuts… but in the past 5 years, how many NEW
turntablism techniques have you seen (again, without DVS). If you don’t
want to embrace technology then fine… but don’t say that this is
“trash” because clearly he’s doing a lot and he’s doing it live.

    Just my two cents.

  10. Hmm not impressed music wise, the high pitch effects get so annoying , so repetitive. I would not stand this at the club for more than a min. Maybe its a good routine, music wise sucks big.
