DJ Sara — now 16 and kicking your arse in a scratch battle

DJ Sara and her brother Ryusei set the scratch world on fire in 2007 with skills beyond their years. And now at 16, DJ Sara's skills just get better.

Turntablists know all about DJ Sara and her little brother Ryusei. When this video hit back in 2007, they were aged 8 and 5 respectively, and sent many of us back to the studio hoping that we weren’t really just put to shame by a couple of primary school kids. And then another video came out, followed by another and another and another, and it soon became clear that those of us who thought we had a modicum of talent would quite easily be schooled by children who wouldn’t even be allowed into the clubs that we play in.

This particular video is from 2012 showing DJ Sara practicing when she was just 13. But now DJ Sara is sweet 16, making everyone who has followed their progress feel reeeaaally old. And as the top video shows, she’s still schooling fools. So everyone, run along back to your turntables and practice. And before anyone dare to criticise, you’d better have your videos ready.

Keep up the good work Sara. Looking forward to seeing future videos of you playing out to huge crowds.

  1. she doesn’t do anything original and her dad taught her what to play, other than that she has rhythm but originality is the key so i hope she does somethung i havent seen before in the future

      • Cutselekta was the original tool, way before any of y’all and second only to Grandmaster Jay. He came up hard in the Bronx during the golden era. Back in ’82 he won his first battle based on his ability to talk crap online about what he knows with no skillz but mouth and an ego that proceeded him. Fast forward to the present, he’s still reprazentin’ his old skool stylez. Remember ya history suckaz! Peace.

        • you missed the point here, she rocked an old school set, i was hoping to hear somethung new and original :)

nice try troll, ps don’t get upset over nothing, you act like my ex gf but i assume youre a grown upset man right?

    • Your expectations of a 16 year old are a little high don’t you think? Children by nature emulate what they see and learn from their environment. Now that she has an extremely solid foundation, now she can go out and find her voice. Maybe she already has — how much originality really exists these days? Are you truly original? We’d love to see some of your work.

Maybe it’s the way that you express yourself, but your comment has clearly been taken badly by some. Instead of saying “she doesn’t to anything original”, maybe “she’s got great skills on which she can build and develop her style” is a better way to say the same thing.

      • if my dad had all that equipment at the age of 13 i would be lucky to practise all i want for free, you can be original and young, LL debuted at 15/16 years old and came like no one else ever heard before, same applies for Roaxanne Shante at 14.

The point is you need to develope your own style and try to be different, most ppl who scratch sound the same these days so its ard to recognize a DJ without visuals.

Pretty amusing how fast DJs get upset over comments (not you) and then start cursing like teenagers, so all DJs who have a short fuse out here, chillout and kiss your gfs)

    • Those unoriginal things you want to point out are the foundation of the art. People are taught by their mentors, yes. This is mostly true everywhere in every art or skill. Making comments like these highlight the natural sexism found at every level of society.. The subtext reads something like this. “This girl is better than me and younger than me, and that makes me angry because if a girl is better at something there has to be a caveat to her accomplishment that puts her in her place.”

      She’s good. End of story.

            • Ah, yes.. Because not treating women like sexual objects is being over sensitive instead of.. you know.. decent..

Very classy, a “joke” equating a teenage girl to being a sexual object followed up by a plea to “take one’s tampon out”. Because of course if someone is speaking their mind in a fashion that is not to your taste it must mean they are on the rag.. The implication that menstruating is a bad thing..

Here’s the thing. DJ Sara in all likelihood menstruates. The outstanding probability is that DJ Sara is better than you on the decks and always will be..

I’ll follow that up with an observation. It would seem that you are the sensitive one in the afore interaction because you seem to feel hurt that someone wasn’t pleased with your tasteless joke. Because.. That would imply that you are in someway out of line.. and you couldn’t be now could you? Because you weren’t trying to be offensive.. and if people are offended it’s because they’re over sensitive.. Not because of your busted language and sexist suppositions..

I’m not saying you’ll agree, or that you can even see it, or will ever try to… I’m just saying that for people that can see this type of thing.. It’s rather obvious.

        • It’s just a joke? You know what, it isn’t. Because whether it was funny or not, DJ Sara might actually look at this page, and what’d she think a) “Oh look how funny that is” or b) Someone who’s taken the time to focus on how I look rather than my talent.

Just hang it up mate, it was a dick move.

  2. First I was thinking yeah it’s pretty cool and kinda surprising to see a yout using old school styles and then on the last beat she drops really really dope cuts and combos!
