Broken tonearm? You should put an ICE on that

I have no idea just how people manage to break turntables, but it happens. And the ICE headshell should help them out in a dire emergency.

We all know that DJ booths can be a bit of a war zone. They’re at least a bit dusty, sometimes stickier than is comfortable, and almost certainly smelly. But it’s when you walk up to the gear and it looks like a scrap metal dealers that you know your evening is going to be interesting. And I’m sure that some of you have come across allegedly bullet proof turntables turning but nothing coming out. Well what you need is an ICE headshell from DJ’s Dream Customs.

Basically instead of passing audio through the tonearm and out through the RCAs, the ICE headshell can bypass the tonearm completely and feed audio right into the back of the mixer.

Obvious first impressions — you’re going to have to be careful with the cable and weight adjustment, but last the video shows, performance doesn’t seem to be compromised at all.

No word yet on pricing, but I’m sure that will become apparent closer to release.

The big question is this — is that white Pioneer PLX-1000 a custom (DDC are a custom shop after all), or a cheeky sneak peek of the future?

UPDATE 1: The above white PLX is a DDC custom with built-in Dicers. See here.

UPDATE 2: Pre-orders for the ICE here.

  1. That is one of the most stupidly ingenious products I have ever seen. It’s like one of those totally obvious solutions that makes you think WHY HASEN’T THIS BEEN MADE YEARS AGO!

  2. It’s clever, but does the added mass / stiffness of the cable cause any problems with tracking? Has anyone actually used one of these?

Edit: Watched the video. Looks like that’s been covered. This is good stuff and definitely would’ve saved my ass a time or two.

  3. Might be a good way to turn the scs1d into a timecode turntable. Wonder if you could make a skipping, at the outer edge of the record, timecode for a 1d and just attach the headshell near the back.

  4. I’m with you Mark, i just don’t get how stuff ends up in such poor condition, I’ve been so wrecked in bars i can’t remember half my set at times but still managed to not break any gear. Also my 1210s don’t look any different to the day i took them out of the original box (which i still keep in case they need to be moved around)

    • One time, I had my decks at a party, my set was finished and the flight cases tops were on loosely, (cables still plugged in to mixer). Some girl who thought she was the belle of the ball decides to sit on top of one of the decks and strut her stuff, forcing the two halves of the flight case to scissor the ground wire, RCA and power cables which some how stood up to the abuse long enough for me to kick her off and cuss her out.

Another time, the guys after me were somehow train wrecking a pre recorded ableton set that they were running through a Korg Monotron for ‘dramatic effect’. Homeboy with the monotron has his can of Labatt on my platter as though the slip mat was a bloody coaster.

I rarely take my gear out, this is why, and this is how house gear gets wrecked.
