A little something for the weekend from a couple of world class DJs, both showing off the capabilities of the new DJM-S9.
First up is our buddy and billion times DMC winning Mr Switch in a video shot by Pioneer DJ. We’ve seen glimpses of this set in the original DJM-S9 promo video, but here is the full version. It’s the usual mixture of scratching and cue point play, but it’s when he throws away the vinyl and just uses the samples and effects inside the S9. The synth tone work in particular is clever and is classic Pioneer, and was previously seen on the DJM-909.

The second video is from Serato, and features former Red Bull champion Eskei83. Shot at the Amsterdam Dance Event a couple of weeks ago, Eskei83 delivers a cool routine in a cool place — the Walls Gallery.
Dayum!, Switch kicked it like steel-toed boot!

Just found out this mixer has a default cut lag of 3mm , when hooked to a laptop it can be changed to as close to 0.3mm in the software but when using the mixer as a standalone device you’re stuck with 3mm.
That’s a big mistake and very unfriendly for scratching with regular battle records even the DJM909 had 1mm.
Anybody who does a review of this should mention this flaw
Yeah, it’s a bit odd that they went to town on it with the curves, reverses and tension adjust all being external to the software and then didn’t bother with the cut lag (particularly with 3mm default). Undermines it’s marketing as a battle mixer just a little bit.
Yeah, I am the one who made the video showing that issue here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hz3lrd9lheM
Unacceptable. Besides that one issue I really love the mixer.
Just to clarify “cut lag” is the term your looking for, decent battle mixers in the earlier 2000’s had cut lag adjust knobs, pio are jus saving money by doing that ish via digi over hardware controls.
Like you imply the issues you raise is jus an early run misdemeanour that’ll be sorted by future updates, no biggie jus the sort of thing early adopters of new shiny gets to “enjoy”.
(Hope I didn’t come across snooty, I jus think it’s important to use the existing terms like “cut lag” for next generation of dj’s who watch vids like these)

It’s all good. Thanks. Nothing taken as snotty. I’ve seen it be adjustable on the Innofader, but haven’t really had to deal with it on my older Vestax and Ecler mixers that came before this S9.
Seems like an easy fix. I don’t care for the adjustability, but if it’s gonna be adjustable, the default amount needs to be changed for sure.
There is no Innofader available yet for the S9 but if the cut lag is fixed then nobody should need one as i believe the Marvel is top notch, better than the Rane faders imo.
My wish: a DJM-S7 without the colored buttons but with the FX, a cheaper version like they did with the DJM909/707, will never happen though.
I’m aware there is no innofader. I am just mentioning it because the cat above me mentioned the cut lag adjustment on earlier mixers. I have seen it on innofaders, but haven’t ever needed any such adjustment on my older vestax and ecler scratch mixers.
I agree with you. If they fix the default cut lag, there is no point in ever bothering with an innofader.
Her’s a handy infographic I prepared earlier. ;)
Hi Jared Jackson, thanks for sharing your video. Question for you: I’m running a one turntable setup, looper on one side (from my laptop) and mostly scratching non-DVS scratch records on my turntable. If scratching “analogue” records with my computer switch on (given that i need it for the loopers) will the cut lag be OK? I need to have serato runing in the background, all the time, even if not using it, just to have the cut lag as i want it to be, right?
Kind regards from switzerland,
Sup, brother.
You just need to have it connected to the laptop. The Serato software and the Utility to not have to be open. The drivers will change the settings for you when it is connected.

Excellent news, many thanks for you reply. Now I just need to try this crossfader before I get this beast! Peace
Damn, those are skills. Here’s my obligatory comment aimed at the DJ industry manufacturers. Videos like this show off what we DJs perceive to be the best type of performance possible on equipment: Turntablism. These routines inspire us, give the equipment manufacturer credibility, AND define both what we want to do and how we want to do it. These videos have the best of both digital and analog worlds as well as respect the traditions of DJing. THAT is why these DJs are stars and Pioneer has so much credibility. Awesome job, Pioneer and DJs Mr Switch and Eskei83. Awesome job.
They also need to get rid of the silver paint on the knobs and just use black plastic. The silver paint on my crossfader is already wearing off quickly. I’ve been cutting on it daily for almost a month now.
I really love watching sets like this.
It makes me wanna jump on the decks & ‘try’ do what seems impossible.
Thanks for these cool vids.
I’m trying to talk myself into a Rane 62 to replace my 57 that I’ve just sold but…that…S9.. I just love the flexibility of the pads built in, it’s making the 62 look like all of its 3 years age. Can’t help thinking that Rane are pushing their R and D guys to hurry that 62 Mk2 along…
There’s also the 57 mk2 out, just to help you with your conflicted state!

I thought that turntablism was dead? And is ruining the art of dejaying? I’m sorry but everyone would rather watch DJ.Switch than the guy that wrote that article here belittling scratching. The more I look at vids like this. The more ridiculous that article seems. And the more asinine and anal that writer appears to be.
it has never been dead.. and can you do better ??
Not according to this article “OPINION: DJing is dead, and vinyl is what killed it” And did I say I can do better?
huh.. what think do i not understand .. vinyl killed the turntablism ??? can you tell me what made it ??
No – turntablism isn’t dead. Nor is it ruining the art of DJing — nobody said it was. And the message of that article has been explained in clear terms for everyone to understand. Even the current DMC champion understood what that article tried to say. But I guess we see what we want to see when it suits our narrative.
The condescending tone of that article, guess that was just my interpretation? Current DMX Champion was being nice. The general consensus I gathered was that the article was crap. I couldn’t get pass the condescending tone, so I stopped reading it after a couple sentences. Glad I didn’t read it. Judging from the reactions it was a crap article anyway.
he was hating on DJs using traditional tools, for whatever reason. In the Rock world we don’t see ppl complaining about the artists using electric guitars and real drums. Seems in the DJ world tradition is not being accepted by some.
He wanted to get away from rotation in DJing and said DJs were using stupid tools (turntables), what in your mind makes you think he wasn’t hateful? as i quote “fuck traditional DJing” in his response
Don’t try to make it seem like he had good intensions, the article was a hate rant against true DJing, although im not a fan of controllers you won’t see me write any article to try to make ppl switch to turntables again..things are what they are, i stick to vinyl no matter if nobody uses it anymore.
