On the 1s, 2s, and mic — Asian Hawk’s Turntable Soul

Traditionally DJs play other people's music. But Asian Hawk has flipped the script a little and is singing and scratching on "Turntable Soul".

Turntablists aren’t the most vocal of people. They’re generally shy introverts, preferring a more heads down approach, usually letting their hands do the talking for them. Now we’ve seen emcees like Edan take to the decks and juggle their own backing set while rhyming. But multiple DMC title winning Asian Hawk is taking turntablism to a new level, by singing over his own music. Presenting “Turntable Soul”, the new single from Asian Hawk.

Having scanned the DMC rules, I can’t find anything that explicitly forbids crooning during a 6 minute set. The revolution is coming.

  1. I really like it. It’s nice to see a soloist flipping what t rationally has been singing with a guitar and a stomp-box to what you see in this demonstration. Good stuff!
