I don’t know about you lot, but I feel the need to start the week gently. So here’s an understated by technically complex routine set song from Asian Hawk. You may recall his first video, where he broke the turntablist mould to sing and scratch. Well here’s another he’s done for DJ City — entitled “Like Water”, it’s a more laid back affair but no less accomplished.
Aaaah… that’s me nicely eased back into the Worxlab chair after three weeks away from it.
The idea is cool (and old from my POV) but the showcase could be better. One direction could be guiturntables and the other scratch bandits crew. As is I feel it too much complication which makes some notes out of harmony (even autotuned)
What I’m talking about:
Similar setup, not singing but they could.

Guiturntable for more public-friendly showcase

Fretless fader with talkbox

Thats why we became DJs.. we cant sing or rap
I love his performance pieces. I find it really unfortunate that DJ gear promotion videos get so many more hits and comments than a well put together performance which showcases music rather than equipment. It’s even more disappointing that the only comment points to videos of people which have done it earlier with ‘more hacked’ equipment. Can’t one just enjoy a well played guitar without having it be the latest-and-greatest guitar with the musician playing it with his/her teeth? Well done Asian Hawk, great tunes!
It’s not only “more hacked” equipment, these are better performers too from music standpoint. I see the good things on Asian Hawk performance but it’s dated from technical side and so-so from musical side with hamonic mistakes driven from trying to do too much with not true ergonomic setup instead focusing in the right part: his music. I believe he could do better in musical terms but IMO he needs to drop some unnecessary technical side until find the true balance. If I want to listen/view good music I search yt for the ones I know or find new ones. If I see mistakes in a performance I still can enjoy it but since this is a opinion comment box I’m going to say what I want from all my respect of course. That’s the reason why there is just one comment and I was tempted to even don’t comment…
Techies doesn’t understand the showcase, musicians doesn’t care about techie side and crowd just see it and think “meh”. My comment was trying to point that these performance aren’t news or too “exciting” but if someone wants to find tresaures should dig a bit.
Since I’m not the writter of the article and due to comments like yours I share less and less these finds. Also I shared for those behind me since I just don’t enjoy techie content by itself, it has to be musical like the content I’ve post. Now magine the post without my comment… that’s how it will be next time.
