Step aside HD25 — Pioneer DJ’s HDJ-S7 is coming for your ears

DJ gear seems to get more expensive every year, which makes retail therapy hard to do. Thankfully headphones are still in the realms of most pockets, thus the new Pioneer DJ HDJ-S7 cans will find many buyers just because they can. Geddit?

The irony has never been lost on me that while manufacturers have churned out over-ear headphones one after another through the years, the clear favourite has been Sennheiser’s HD25, an on-ear pair. And while some have tried to topple them from the top seat, none have succeeded. But never afraid of a challenge, Pioneer DJ presents the HDJ-S7, an on-ear pair that pushed audio fidelity to new levels.

Pioneer DJ always does the best PR, and here it is:

Deeper Connection: Meet the HDJ-S7 professional on-ear DJ headphones –

Outstanding audio quality, superior durability and improved functionality for professional DJs

24th April 2018: Following the launch of our HDJ-X10, HDJ-X7 and HDJ-X5 professional over-ear DJ headphone models in autumn 2017, we’re releasing the HDJ-S7 professional on-ear DJ headphones. The new model offers outstanding audio quality, superior durability and improved functionality for comfortable DJing.

Available in black or white, the HDJ-S7 headphones are the world’s first on-ear DJ headphones to feature 40-mm HD1 drivers.2 This ensures the clear sound separation needed for monitoring during mixes, from rich and powerful bass to clear mid-to-high frequencies. Designed and built to be highly robust, they’ve cleared the US Military Standard MIL-STD-810G Shock test3, as well as our stringent in-house durability tests.

The new model features a swivel mechanism, a flexible headband and a smaller on-ear can, which is preferred by some DJs – so you can comfortably use the HDJ-S7 for every style of DJ monitoring.

The HDJ-S7 headphones will be available from mid-May 2018 at an SRP of £179 including VAT.

KEY FEATURES OF THE HDJ-S7 HEADPHONES

  1. 1.Outstanding sound
  • High-quality audio design

The HDJ-S7 headphones are equipped with our newly developed 40-mm HD drivers, making them the world’s first on-ear DJ headphones to reproduce high-resolution sound from 5Hz to 40 kHz – the same frequency range achieved by the flagship HDJ-X10 over-ear headphones. This ensures clear sound separation, from rich and tight bass to crystal-clear mid-to-high frequencies. As a result, the HDJ-S7 headphones deliver the immersive sound needed for precise monitoring in the loudest clubs.

  • 4-core twisted-structure cable

The independent ground wire in the 4-core twisted-structure cable provides superior left and right channel separation, improving sound quality.

  • Bass reflex chamber

The bass reflex chamber in the upper housing ensures excellent bass response and sound insulation.

  1. 1.Superior durability
  • Rigorously tested

Take the HDJ-S7 headphones on the road and feel confident they’ll handle severe conditions and heavy use. The headphones have cleared the US Military Standard MIL-STD-810G Shock test, as well as our own demanding stress testing.

  • Highly durable materials and construction

To make the HDJ-S7 headphones highly durable and lightweight at the same time, we’ve used metal components in parts that are tested in high stress environments to create a strong construction for professional use.

  1. 1.Improved functionality
  • Swivel mechanism for all monitoring styles

When developing any new product we create numerous prototypes, each time with improvements based on the feedback of highly respected international DJs who test the equipment. Using this feedback and the results of our analysis of many different styles of monitoring, we’ve made sure the HDJ-S7 headphones are comfortable to use for any monitoring style, especially when hanging them on your neck with the swivel angle fixed to 45 degrees forwards. What’s more, the outside of the housing is textured for enhanced grip, so you can quickly grab it and start listening.

  • Comfortable and flexible headband

To help you find the perfect fit, the HDJ-S7 headphones feature a flexible, durable headband. Passing stringent tests, including opening and closing 20,000 times, they’re built to withstand intense use.

  • Comfortable ear pads

Improvements made to the ear pads (compared to those on the HDJ-C70 headphones) enable you to DJ in comfort for longer. We carefully selected high-quality urethane material that’s soft to the touch and provides cushioning, and we even paid attention to the positioning of the stitching to ensure you don’t feel it.

  1. 1.Other features
  • Replacement parts available

Easily refresh the detachable cables and ear pads on the HDJ-S7 headphones using replacement parts (available separately).

  • Excellent portability

When you’re travelling to gigs, you can be confident your HDJ-S7 headphones will be well protected in the included compact carry case. Made from strong materials to protect your headphones from bumps and knocks on flights and in transit, the case has pockets for storing accessories such as USB devices and SD cards.

  • Various accessories included

The HDJ-S7 headphones come with two detachable cables: a 1.2 m coiled cable (approximately 3.0 m when extended) and a 1.6 m straight cable. An L-type mini-jack prevents the connection from being knocked or accidentally disconnected during performances, even in cramped booths.

  • 2-year warranty

To guarantee long-term, reliable performance, a 2-year warranty is included.

1 High definition.

LET’S TALK FREQUENCY RESPONSE

Hearing is susceptible to all manner of variables, but it is generally accepted that humans have a frequency range of 20Hz to 20kHz. The HD25s extend this range a little to 16-22kHz. But the new HDJ-S7 massively expand the range to 5-40kHz. That’s a bottom end range that you feel rather than hear, and a top end frequency that will communicate with bats and drive dogs mental.

For those swayed by numbers, they are outstanding, and match their over-ear HDJ-X10 headphones. But do they really make a difference to most of us? Well not me because the top end of my hearing is shot through hereditary hearing loss that falls away sharply after 2kHz. But for those with golden ears, or at least have their hearing intact, these will sound amazing. And for me, it’s best to have the largest range possible to counteract hostile DJ environments, even if it’s more PR boast that useful feature.

THE BOTTOM LINE

There’s only so much that can be done with headphones, and while Sennheiser has a classic that they’re likely to top in our lifetimes, Pioneer DJ keeps bringing new things and evolving headphones, which we definitely need.

Given the flagship nature of these, the price is up there — $199/€199/£179 and will be available in the next few weeks,

  1. As an on-ear headphone user, i have used the hd-25 for years, and switched to the most overlooked headphone of them all: the beyer dynamic dt-1350 wich i prefer above the hd25.
But these look awesome, and will check them out.

    • Definitely not overlooked by me. I adore them more than the HD25, and even suggested improvements in my review which they later incorporated. If only they’d sent me another pair as a thank you. :(

      • Then we share the same opinion! I got the one with the coiled cable.
And changed the pads for the thicker and slightly bigger t51p pads, wich also increases a bit off bass.
In my eyes or should i say ears, it has the best construction, and the best sound from any dj headphone i heard, its so crystal clear, you hear everything.
But i very rarely see top dj’s use them, so hence overlooked in my opinion

  2. Yet another Pioneer headphone…

I still got my Sony MDR-V700 cans which (back in 2004) were probably the top selling headphones.
That package in my shelf states a frequency range of 5hz-30khz and still the HD-25 sounds way better to my ears.

    • I bought those in 02 (the day of my wedding lol) … the chord failed about 5 years later, i went to the Sony store and they just gave me a new pair. They went through hell, i ran over them with my chair one night and broke the cup off… they still work… I wish they still made them, I broke down and bought a pair of Pionerrs which as ok, but i’m on the hunt for something better.

  3. Nice. Might be in the market soon. My HD25 right ear cup is shot and everyone says to replace the cable but on top of feeling like I’m paying too much for it with shipping, I also have issues pulling the plug out of the ear cup. Just doesn’t come out for some reason. Hope I see reviews on these soon. Addition of a case is a nice touch

  4. Look, I love Pioneer headphones. I find the sound signature suits best for me when mixing. I mix only in headphones and never rely on monitors. Just because monitoring can be great or garbage depending on the clubs so I got used to mixing this way. And they offer everything I need sound wise. Which the hd25s don’t. always lacked a bit of low end clarity for loud club environments. The Beyers cover that and feel great. Where the pioneers fall short though is construction. Over time, they tend to fall apart, even the top models. Now, I haven’t tried the latest generation but the previous 2000s just tend to crack slowly. I only use them in clubs, always carry them in a hardcase and generally take good care of them. But the construction with multiple parts and some odd plastic choices means they never last for more than 2 years. This is where the hd25s are king. And the beyers. I know pairs of 25s that are running great after 10 years, bar a cable replacement and pads. But all the guys that I know that use pioneers always have to get new ones after a while. And this is from using them on a weekly basis. So looking at the pictures, I’m afraid these would probably suffer the same fate where the head band cover slowly starts forming cracks and loses it’s shape over time. For me, i switched to beyers and never looked back. They feel indestructible, just like the hd25s and although i like over-ear cans, and pioneer sound, i just can’t give them my money anymore. 3 pairs in 5 years in just too often.
