VIDEO: Another John Type sequencing clip

John Type's Controltablism clip from a couple of months ago has evolved to include Ableton Live, a Push 2, and a Mixars DUO mixer.

Cast you minds back a couple of months — we featured Italian DJ John Type who had come up with a way to use sequencing with DJ software. Clever stuff no doubt, but now John has incorporated an Ableton Push 2 into his setup, complimented by the MIDI mapped Mixars DUO mixer.

Whilst I realise that this can be achieved with other hardware and software, I’m still impressed with John’s performances and evolving setups. Incorporating a MIDI mixer with audio interface linked to Ableton’s own hardware is probably the most efficient way to achieve this, and I hope that John and others continue to develop this idea. It’s certainly not pure turntablism, but definitely has a place in the digital DJ’s repertoire.

Good work John — keep it coming.

  1. I thought that vinyl and turntable’ism was dead? And that turntables and Jog wheels won’t be around according to the experts here. About 8 months ago someone here said that jog wheels wont be around in 2 years. How that looking? lol,!!!

    • Mixtape feature is more easy with scratch track plugin since you can automate everything keeping the control from Serato vinyl going even further than Flip… but regular Serato user didn’t try anything outside their confort zone (I tried lots of times to explian this at their forum with no luck) and even find these things “cheating”
So if someone want to do mixtape with Sdj+Live it should be easy to just link them and use two computers until Serato adds full “performance recorder” which is the logical step for Flip (when the user base get ready for it) but maybe in these future DVS is out of equation (as Link doesn’t work as most SSL users wish)

      • Interesting indeed. I have been trying to find a solution as my workflow still uses mixtape. (I record a lot of mixes weekly). I need the full editable automation recording a long side individual outputs per channel.

        • My advice use two computers (or dedicated hardware for recording even an iPhone/iPad with right audio interface) until Serato make it happen… or switch.
I left Serato forum bored about pointing solutions including how to do this and how to sync external midi hardware with a simple volca modded (midi out) when they release a poll about implementing or not midi out and how (lol)
Few time later come Dj808 so it seems that moderators aren’t aware of the development, Serato laugh from users or directly they are very lost IMO.
