EXCLUSIVE: ADJ’s updated VMS5 Controller

The American DJ VMS4 was the first four channel DJ controller on the market. And the updated VMS5 will be seen for the first time at DJ Expo 2015.

ADJ American DJ VMS5 Virtual DJ controller (17)

A few years ago, American DJ launched the VMS4, and subsequently the Traktor flavoured VMS4.1. It was quite a beast laden with more than most would have expected, and is quite notable in being the first four channel controller to hit the market. And after a sustained period of focussing on its core market, ADJ is back with an updated version. The ADJ VMS5 is a neat update of the originals with bigger wheels and other improvements too.

OUR SAY

I honestly thought that despite the name, ADJ (as they’re now named) wouldn’t be dipping its toe in the pure DJ pool anymore, and would instead choose to focus on PA and lighting. But no, here is a nice update to their successful controller. It’s also pretty cool in that with the full version of Virtual DJ 8 (that you have to buy), you get full DVS capability. And I also like the different coloured RGB knobs, but it’s unclear if the colour can be changed.

BTW I know you all love pictures of the ins and out, and despite pictures of every other angle, that picture didn’t get taken. I asked, and it’s the same as the existing one.

YOUR SAY

Have you got experience of the VMS4 and 4.1? Do you play out with one? Is there enough here to get you to upgrade?

  1. Nice to see the trusty 4.1 getting a well deserved update. I’ve owned mine for a couple of years now and it’s been great, no trouble at all. As I’m mostly doing mobile/karaoke work these days, my needs are not as demanding as they used to be when I was spinning in clubs, but I guess upgrading the platters has got to be a good thing. The 4.1 platters could be described as “adequate” if all you’re doing is cueing tracks and maybe the very occasional backspin – hopefully the new version will have a little more wicky-wicky appeal.

  2. I bought a 5.0 online over the weekend. Not received it yet but I’m inclined to return it when it gets here. was hasty and did not notice that the play and pause button had been combined into one button. This means that the stutter function on the play button will be lost. I think that was one of the best features especially with m style of DJing. Think I’ll hold on to the 4.1 a bit longer. got it a few years now and still goes strong.

Might keep the new one if I can re-map the buttons to Cue-Play-Pause, instead of Play/Pause-Cue-A/B
