While we all sit and wait for Pioneer DJ to answer Denon DJ’s Prime range, it seems that Denon DJ themselves aren’t quite so patient. Having already slapped Pioneer DJ around the face with its Prime range gauntlet, they’ve now preempted any planned CDJ and DJM response with updated Prime units. The static jogged SC6000 Prime, the motorised SC6000M Prime, and four channel X1850 Prime mixer all get worthy updates, and send a definite warning shot to Pioneer DJ’s future plans.
Normally, I would run separate stories, but Denon DJ has sent out combined PR. So that’s just what I’ll do. Strap in…

BIG AND SMALL TOUCHES
Before I start, I have yet to see or touch these units. inMusic has a big pre-NAMM media launch planned in Miami, but I’m tied up on another project. But I’m reliably informed that post NAMM, I’ll be tripping over a pile of new inMusic goodies in the Worxlab.
So I’m left to pour over PR and use my existing experience of Prime gear to add commentary. So let’s look at each big bit:
BIG SCREEN: Taken from Akai’s MPC range and now grafted into top end Prime models, this is quite a window into the belly of the 6000s. The existing 7″ one is already big, but for me this entirely removes the need to have a laptop in my setup. Two of those should be ample for anyone.
BIGGER WHEELS: Denon DJ’s old range had the 3700 and 3900 vinyl topped players. And while this 8.5″ beauty might not be as big as that, but it’s plenty big enough. And if you want bigger, use turntables or a Rane Twelve, because vinyl feel is obviously more important to you than anything else.
INTERNAL DRIVES: Another idea taken from old Denon DJ and now part of new Denon DJ, the SC6000 Primes, just like the Prime 4, now have internal storage. You have to supply the storage of course — you don’t have to use it and can stick with USB or SD.
On the smaller side it’s touches like quick release vinyl (I trust I can still adjust the friction between vinyl and slipmat) and locking power cables that make small but important differences.
The X1850 Prime is less of an obvious update, and definitely feels more like the flippant response of “50” when asked what the difference between the X1800 and X1850 was by one of the team in Slack. I feel like somebody could secret swap out a new X1850 for my old X1800 and it would take me a while to twig.
I’m assuming that given the top tier direction of Prime that an X2000 Prime is in the works somewhere. I cannot help but feel that there’s more to be squeezed out of the four channel mixer paradigm than we’re currently seeing, if only because I have a Xone 96 sat next to the X1800 Prime in the Worxlab.
I’m sure there are reams more that I could write, and probably will once I’ve played. It’s only then when I can form real opinions based on hands-on experience.
ENGINES REVVING
One noticeable change is the way Engine is referred to. Engine OS is now a thing, and rather than just being firmware is now the glue that binds these devices together. It implies a family, running on a common platform. Indeed, Engine DJ has also just appeared, and a screenshot referring to sync manager is included in the PR.
Perhaps this is indicating that Engine DJ is the name of a software suite that includes Engine OS, Engine Sync Manager for managing playlists and devices, and beyond that a full fat version to take on the established software players? It’s the logical conclusion, and is exactly how rekordbox came about. It just has to be so much better than it currently is. It’s the most common complaint from user and we media types.
More than anything, there is even more of a feel of a coherent ecosystem running a family of products. Next week will show us more I’m sure.
BUT WHY NOW?
Usually in the technology race, it’s a game of keeping up with the Joneses. Company A releases something — company B releases something a bit better — and repeat. But in this scenario, company A dominates, company B attacks, company A has no response waits, company B pre-emptively attacks again.
Now one could argue that there is no attacking, and that Denon DJ is simply putting out a string of excellent products. But their initial marketing campaign was based around #changeyourrider, a direct reference to leaving Pioneer DJ behind. And one could also argue that this shock and awe carpet bombing of NAMM (there’s more to come — its right there in the PR) is a response to anything that Pioneer DJ might be planning for NAMM. After all, they most likely have their roadmap right in front of them courtesy of new hire Rik Parkinson.
But having taken the Prime players to this level, it must surely give Denon DJ some breathing space where that can focus on marketing to tackle the monopoly that Pioneer DJ has. As I’ve said before, market share is so much more than just having the most advanced technology. Denon DJ clearly has that, so it’s everything else they need to work on. The “best” toys are not enough.
SUMMING UP
The SC6000 Prime will cost $1499/£1259, the SC6000M Prime is $1699/£1429, and the X1850 Prime is $1099/£999. All are available “early Q2”, but so was the Prime 4. I trust Denon DJ learned from their experience with that.
GALLERY
Everyone seems to be going bigger these days. I would love it if my local club bought this, but I would never buy this for myself. I need a whole rig to fit in a single carry-on for the plane.
Why aren’t there any full featured small footprint gear?
Forget the Rane Twelve, how about a Rane Eight or Rane Seven?
How about a SC2500 deck to match an Akai AMX?
How about Prime 1 the size of a MC4000?
My verdict is that this is DOA.
Although it may be a superior product, you can’t win a pissing contest with Pioneer in their core market. You need to focus on markets that Pioneer is neglecting. Mobile DJs aren’t buying this when they have the Prime 4. Clubs aren’t buying this because it isn’t on anyone’s rider.
I guess I was right on. Denon Prime Go came out.
i still want a small MC4000 (about the size of XDJ700) – that would be dope.
As Mark has already alluded to, there’s more announcements to come.

Now we know that there will a prime 2, if it will be called that. Can’t wait til Monday. Lol.
Shouldn’t the vinyl disc protrude a bit over the edge of the platter?
Check the V7, dear down-voter.
I’m with you. I do a scratch trick where I push my thumb against the edge of the vinyl, lift it and use my other fingers to drum. I struggle to do that on the SC5000M. I hope the SC6000M’s vinyl allows me to do that.
As many of us said with the release of the Prime 4,SC5000’s, it’s only a matter of time now before Denon take “Back” the crown.
However, for those of you saying Pioneer is not answering or innovating…
Pioneer DJ has changed it’s name to “AlphaTheta” or something like that.
Denon has no chance against that type of innovation.
Again, just a matter of time before people realize they have been taken for too long and paying exorbitant prices for minimal tech.
Pioneer fanboys can be justified in the reliability of their hardware and RekordBox…for now.
This has me really excited. The look of these players will make it much easier to convert people over from the Pioneer ecosystem. The larger platter on the M is very welcomed as well.
A really solid update to the SC5000/SC5000 Prime family, refining them a little more.
EP needs work (as we all know) but the only MAJOR gripe is that the beat grids aren’t adjustable or flexible. After they add this, the rest is just tidying up the few minor bugs because I camy think of anything else lacking. The beat grids are holding it back but they know this and it’s just a matter of time before the team in NZ drop this. Rick Parkinson won’t allow it to go on for too long.
Why, in prime, does the sound begin, at 20% “into” the waveform on screen? It is reall annoying. Vdj does the same thing, and it stinks.
Fix this, so the beginning of the sound is matched/aligned correctly.

And, I’ll throw you another bone from the mind of minolta, i call it “waveform painting” this is gonna be .uge—-
“self made” “hand drawn” waveforms where you pick the shape, size, and color

I’m left wondering if I could take the 6000M platter and drop it into the 5000M. It seems like they took away the bevel on the platter for more real estate
That sounds like the kind of stupid thing that I would try if left alone in a room with both units. But from the looks of the construction, you’d need to remove the silver inner bezel from the 5000M to allow the 6000M platter to drop in. Yeah, not attempting that.
How’s the platter drift on the motorized model? My SC3900 was awful.
Bless your heart for posting high quality photos Mark. The 6000M 8.5″ platter is almost up their with my old DN-S3700 9″ platters. Because it supports Serato DJ out of the box, I will purchase two. Unless one of the controllers announced Monday has 2 8.5″ Direct Drive Platters. I need Denon to now offer Splice like the old DN-D9000 (Think Serato DJ FLIP). Include crossfade for cocktail/dinner music like their old CD players. And finally support Track Replay Gain to play all the tacks at the same volume.
What an underwhelming update. no real innovation, more of an SC5000mk2 really.
The players look better from an aesthetic point of view (The SC5000’s never looked that good to me) but Denon have failed to address their biggest problem and that’s the woeful Engine preparation software and it’s inability to do get some of the basics right. This has been the Denon achilles heal for years and years but until they get that right, now matter how good the players are, they’ll unlikely to be a consideration for the majority who come from Rekordbox and the Pioneer ecosystem and that’s the brutal truth here.
Ooh, I’m tempted.
Having invested in the old HS5500 decks in the past, the SC5000s came close (two layers) but no cigar (no internal drive option).
Now they’ve added that capability, and an even larger screen than the 5000s, these could be the units to finally replace my 5500s – which I stopped using because the internal drives were full, and they wouldn’t take anything bigger.
If they can actually deliver in Q2 and not have any long drawn out delays, then it could be winner winner chicken dinner.
..I want wait Pioneer..and (IMHO) no-chance to play CDs is not a minor ‘issue’..
CDs are..
light
full quality sound
less expensive per-track
backup
handling ‘something real’
endless chance to rip (if I want a digital files, anyway)
no fees to pay (that I’ve to when I play digital music only)
I agree with the handling something real point. I have heard that from many people, and in many ways I agree myself.
In every other way, I personally feel that USB is vastly superior. It’s cheap, light, fast, small, can be duplicated easily, and stored in the cloud. The audio quality is identical, and USB drives don’t skip because of finger prints or scratches. Importantly, I can’t use CDs in controllers or modern media players other than CDJs.
Handling something real = using DVS. Nothing beats the feeling of vinyl at your fingertips.
In my opinion this is the best way to compete with an entrenched competitor, take advantage of how slowly they move and improve your own products on your schedule rather than waiting to react to what they do.
Now we know who absorbed all the former NI employees :)
They clearly took a cue or two from NI’s latest hardware designs.
Comparing the looks of SC5000 and 6000 side by side, yesterday’s nextlevelness clearly looks a little dated, today.
Good job on the aesthetics, Denon DJ!
Given that the SC5000s have (until recently) been improved to be almost flawless and fun to play with, I expect nothing less from these.
Did NI employees go to Denon DJ? Where was that post?
Wow! I’m impressed. (Still don’t like the big rings in the spindle)
And you listened and went with the 8” platter. #efhuttonofdjing
Who listened?
Big drop, are we gonna see anything from Rane or Pioneer?
Rane is leaking, and Pioneer is very quiet right now.
