Out of beta: Remixvideo for Windows arrives along with 1.2 update

DISCLOSURE: I am currently contracting with Mixvibes to produce their cross-platform manual for Remixvideo.

“Where’s the Windows version?”

That’s a question that echoes around the DJ world all too often, and one no-doubt asked of Remixvideo, the intuitive but powerful video mixing app. While Remixvideo has been released on macOS for a while now, Windows users have had to be satisfied with trying out the beta.

But now, the wait is over, and you can purchase the final of version 1.2, which came out at the same time as the macOS update. Remixvideo 1.2 brings with it a bunch of new features like touchscreen compatibility, and support for Spout, the open source framework for sharing video output between compatible software. You can also still get the app for half price at $99.99/£89.

Paris, France – May 24th, 2017 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

VJ software made intuitive, now with Windows support.

Remixvideo 1.2 brings immediate ease of use and VJing’s most complete external syncing features to Windows. Set it up in seconds and pair Remixvideo with CDJs or any VST/Ableton Link-compatible software.

Remixvideo is a unique opportunity for aspiring VJs to get hands-on with professional video features while bypassing the steep learning curve of other software. Relying on the intuitive interface popularized by grid controllers, it makes it easier for everyone to creatively match music and visuals.

Coming along with Windows support, the 1.2 update is also compatible with touchscreen computers, offering an alternative to MIDI controllers or remote control applications. Adding Spout support, the counterpart to macOS’s Syphon , Remixvideo can send its video output to other compatible apps to create rich projections and complex visualizations.

Last but not least, this new iteration introduces Audio Live Input , which analyzes the BPM, waveform and frequency of external audio sources. This feature is at its best when combined with audio-reactive video files, making them move according to the music outputted from another piece of software or hardware.

This makes Remixvideo the first VJ software to support three main external syncing features: first VST / AU plugin and Ableton Link and now Audio Live Input. As a result, it can easily be paired with one’s favorite DJ software, DAW or piece of gear. Whether using Ableton Live , CDJs or a controller, Remixvideo provides fully-synced visuals in each case.

My thoughts

The appeal of Remixvideo is obvious: the user interface is very approachable, and like its audio-performance sibling, lets even the most newbie user get creative with the samples instantly. You can have a go on Remixlive, the music version, to get a good idea of the workflow.

In my experience with the software, there are still some small issues to iron out, such as a weird bug where the preview screen shows over the top of the grid, or the odd time the CPU fan goes crazy, but it’s stable and fun to use. My friends and I tried getting the beta set up along with HeavyM via Spout to do our projection mapped video for our techno night in Huddersfield. Unfortunately, Spout was having none of it on the Windows desktop PC, though we could get Syphon working just fine on my old MacBook Pro (albeit at 14 frames per second).

And that’s exactly where Remixvideo would be ideal in the performance space: easy to use and easy to leave running for anyone to play with. My biggest issue is the retail asking price of $200. Even at the discounted price, it just about feels fair.
