Numark Mixtrack Platinum Serato controller (5)

Mixtrack Platinum — they liked it so they put a screen in it

There has been a running in-joke within the DJWORX team about manufacturers putting screens in any gear they can find. We pondered about screens in headshells, earphones, and pretty much anything that sounded preposterous. But Numark isn’t letting up on the putting a screen in it shtick and thus the ridiculously popular Mixtrack gets a big brother in the shape of the Mixtrack Platinum.

Some words from Numark HQ:

NUMARK ESTABLISHES NEW STANDARD OF DJ PERFORMANCE WITH INTRODUCTION OF MIXTRACK PLATINUM PREMIUM CONTROLLER

World’s leading innovator of DJ solutions introduces full-featured controller with hi-definition LCD displays, Serato DJ software and exclusive Numark touch-capacitive jog wheels

Cumberland, RI USA (August 1, 2016)— Numark (numark.com), the world’s leading innovator of DJ solutions, today announced the introduction of their standard-setting DJ controller, the Mixtrack Platinum. Numark’s Mixtrack family (Mixtrack 3 and Mixtrack Pro 3) is the world’s number one selling series of DJ controllers, because their simple, highly-functional design attracts DJs on all levels, from skilled amateurs to the most demanding professionals. They’re fun, easy-to-use, full-featured and offer professional build quality at an affordable price. The Mixtrack Platinum extends those attributes by adding hi-definition LCD displays at the center of each platter, 4-deck capability and gain controls for each channel.

The Mixtrack Platinum’s full-function display screens (showing BPM, track time, pitch position and deck number) makes it possible for the DJ to keep their view on the controller, not buried in the computer screen, so the DJ stays connected to their audience and the action. With independent transport controls, 24-bit audio output, wide-ranging 100mm pitch controls, Serato DJ Intro, multi-function touch strip and 16 back-lit performance pads, Mixtrack Platinum is definitely ready for action.

In addition, its Numark-exclusive touch-capacitive platters really make this something special. Utilizing revolutionary Numark technology, the platters give DJs the ability to scratch or stop a track simply by touching the top of the platter, while at the same time allowing them to adjust the pitch by manipulating the platter from the side. The touch control is also intelligent and self-correcting, sensing every motion and touch to ensure solid, reliable operation no matter what’s going on around you. No other brand of controller has platters like these. In addition, they’re made from heavy-duty metal, so they stand up to heavy-duty use, night after night.

Mixtrack Platinum — they liked it so they put a screen in it

SUBTLE BUT IMPORTANT CHANGES

Essentially this is a decent update to the Mixtrack Pro 3. As you can see from the above image, Key features such as a gain control and 4 channel capability have been added. This simply adds to reinforce the Pro moniker of the original, but does bring some features that some users will definitely like. I’ve never really cared for four channels awkwardly crammed into two channel units without the requisite matching controls, but it’s nice to have anyway.

But this is all about the screens. Sitting below a clear plastic cover, the jog wheel display shows important information. Deck, BPM, and time are shown, with an outer ring for progress and LED marker too. No track names, but this will offer a decent amount of info without having to look at the screen. And I imagine that if you update to Serato DJ, you’ll be able to add the Numark Dashboard too if you want more at-a-glance detail.

Summing up, the Mixtrack Platinum is available now for $299/£239.

The Old Owner
  1. “the world’s leading innovator of DJ solutions, today”…thus made me fall off my chair. Thi dz1200 had screens in the middle 10+years ago.

    1. It’s true, some CD players certainly offered this even before technics, but no Controller has BPM or time in the wheel, the technology to do this is different, it’s $299 USD and hardly anyone is buying CD players.

  2. I just got the Mixtrack Pro 3, less than 3 weeks ago, and it looks like they are in the same price margin!
I just hope they have handled some things much better on the Platinum than on the Pro 3 like:

    * the incomprehensible auto looping
    * sampler pad mode – when you load 4 samples on say the left deck, the right deck also plays the same samples on Serato. In Virtual DJ 8 things are handled better, since you can load 4 different samples on the opposite deck.
    * when using Intro, the led meters blip red through out, even when the faders are all the way down. Serato DJ works fine.

If they sort out the above flaws in the Platinum then I can do a trade in, if not I’ll just stick with the Pro 3.

    1. The “software” workflow of intro is of course different that other software. The sampler, looper, and meters work as the Serato team intended. That’s the beauty of this unit, is that you get to choose software. We ship with Serato Intro but if you want to use Virtual DJ, or any others you can. Everyone has preferences.

      1. For Intro some shortcomings are understandable, like having only 4 sample slots for both decks, but the led metering should not go red even when the volume is zero. I am a long time user of VDJ, trying to shift to Serato DJ. When I load 4 samples on one deck, I’d like to have 4 more samples on the opposite deck, not a replica of what I have already loaded. Unfortunately this is not so, at least with my unit. Maybe it is the way Serato handles samples (on this unit), coz on VDJ I get to play the 8 samples, individually, 4 on each deck.

        1. That’s just how serato handles samples. They have a “global” sampler, which you can play from either deck, as opposed to “per deck” samples which it seems VDJ is letting you have. The reason for this is for consistency. As long as you know which bank or set of samples you have loaded in the sampler, you know what each pad will do without having to look at the software.

      2. Chris, this addition to the Numark line looks fantastic. I see it is USB class compliant, so does this mean it might get iOS support too at some point? It would be good to have a means of sending those screens data over USB in a standard manner – what I’m hoping for is to map DJ Player Pro to this beauty and get either 4 deck or STEMS mixing!

  3. No excuse for pioneer not having a platter marker indicator for their newest models like the DDJ-RR and DDJ-RB. I want the DDJ-RR but lack of a platter marker will keep me from purchasing one. I don’t think that Controller manufactures realize how lifeless a unit looks under operation without one.

    1. totally agree, the vestax vci380 was the last best most functional two channel portable controller and IMO it still hasn’t been beat

why the F will no other manufacturers make a two channel controller with adjustable tension jogs, platter marker position LED, long pitch faders, pads etc

Pioneer SUCK for leaving out features on the cheaper controllers all for the sake of reinforcing their ‘pro’ CD players etc. Hopefully Denon will bring something out!

      1. I purchased the reloop TM8 over the vestax. One of the biggest mistakes I’ve ever made. when I saw the Pioneer unit I was all set to get it. then I saw that the light in the middle of the jogs didn’t indicate platter position and I was like hell no. I’m waiting on Denon as well. a two-channel version of the 4 channel controller they just put out would be lovely.

    2. For me the big gripe with Pioneer is the lack of a full 100mm pitch fader in their low end products. It is one the reasons I got the Mixtrack Pro 3. If they did an SR/SB or RR/RB version with long throw faders I’d be totally sold. That and a screen on the platters.

  4. my mixtrack platinum jog wheel is not working now. make it unable to scratch bought it just a month ago. i play wiyh serato dj intro please help me out
