Denon DJ X1800 Prime mixer NAMM 2017 (2)

There’s no point putting out a technology laden media player aimed at the club scene without a beast of a mixer to sit betwixt them. So having worked out exactly what the SC5000 Prime was going to be, it was a matter of working out exactly what that should be. And that mixer is the new Denon DJ X1800 Prime mixer, a more conventional 4 channel mixer, but designed to perfectly support their new media player.

As ever, there are their words for the facts, followed by my words for the opinion:

The perfect complement

Again, like the SC5000 Prime, I had a chance to play with the X1800 Prime a little. Obviously my focus was on the player though. But I got some pics for you:

Obviously, I’m less excited about the X1800 Prime than I am for the SC500o Prime. The four channel club mixer blueprint is more or less set in stone these days. But it’s what the X1800 Prime brings to the be the perfect partner for the SC5000s.

I’m going to skip past a lot of the very obvious stuff, and get to the more Prime focussed and newer features. Firstly, bar some minor cosmetic differences, the render and the mixer I had are identical. The X1800 Prime is clearly a hub for networking up to four SC5000 Primes together. And in doing so, you get access to Engine Connect, which will BPM sync effects across all players. I like the dual USB (who doesn’t?) as well as the 4 x digital ins.

Eagle eyed readers will have spotted “DVS” as an input option (I didn’t when it was in The Worxlab). Just like the SC5000 Prime, discussions for Serato DJ and Traktor are taking place, but nothing to announce at the time of writing.

I am however confused by what an “expressive” crossfader is. All of us at Team DJWORX are. I can tell you that it feels nice, and I’m happy to see curves for cross and line faders. For reverses, you’ll need to look at switching cables and routing. It’s a hack but it works. And for the geeks, the Flex Fader is made in the TKD factory. I’m sure Innofader will chip in when they’ve had a chance to play too.

Hi/low pass filters per channel is good too, and from what I remember they sounded great. It is a single resonance control though, but filters should be used sparingly anyway. I like the switchable isolator/EQ as well.

The built-in effects are good, and the touch strip doesn’t feel at all gimmicky. It’s nice to be able to jump up and down the strip in a non linear way that a knob doesn’t allow you to do.

Sorry this is a bit light on detail, but once the Denon DJ site is back up, you’ll be able to find all the answers you need in this link.

Summing up, this is the same price as the SC5000 Prime, so £1499/$1899.
