HF Wireless Headphones

NAMM 2015 — Numark HF Wireless Headphones

HF Wireless Headphones

It’s been a while since we did a headphone shootout, and even though there hasn’t been a revolution in their design, the landscape will inevitably have changed, meaning it’s long overdue. That said, tucked in amongst the new products Numark are showing off, is an attempt to update on-ear cans for the modern DJ’s lifestyle needs with the HF Wireless Headphones. Whilst not the first headphones to try and merge the needs of day-to-day life and professional use (I reviewed the Urbanears Zinken a while ago, which do a great job and are still my daily drivers), they try to set apart from the crowd.

Featuring Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity and near-field communication (NFC) stuffed in along with all the other features, the sub-£50 price tag make them very attractive to those in the market for a versatile pair of headphones. The use of NFC is interesting, as it literally means you just have to touch your headphones to your device to pair up the wireless connection. Easy-peasy!

The Numark HF Wireless Headphones don’t HAVE to be wireless, either. Latency over Bluetooth can be an issue when doing something as immediate as DJing, so there’s the option to use the included cable when mixing it up.

As usual, here’s the press release for your perusal:

Premier DJ equipment manufacturer eliminates restrictive cable with new high-performance headphones

Ash Vale, UK (January 22, 2015)—Numark (numark.com), the world’s leading innovator of DJ solutions, today announced the introduction of its new HF Wireless DJ headphones.

Designed to free the DJ from the restrictions of a traditional fixed-length headphone cable and thus allow greater movement and flexibility while performing, the Numark HF Wireless headphones provide superb audio performance, great wireless range and an “all night long” battery that really delivers on its promise.

The key to its superior wireless streaming is its Bluetooth® 4.0 technology with NFC pairing, so signal connection is always strong and clear. The HF Wireless has a wireless range of over 30 feet for great freedom of movement while monitoring the musical delivery. In addition, the unit’s built-in rechargeable battery affords 10 hours of music playback on a single charge, so those 10:00 p.m.– 4:00 a.m. gigs are no problem. Other thoughtful touches that make HF Wireless a pleasure to use are the on-ear cup for great bass response and outstanding noise isolation, a compact, collapsible design with built-in microphone and wide-range 40mm drivers that deliver detailed, articulate sound and well-defined bass—essential for perfect beatmatching. Plus, the HF Wireless headphones come with a 4 ft. cable with 1/8-inch stereo plug, so the DJ doesn’t need a second set of headphones. Wireless or wired, these are the only ones you need

Additional features:

  • Rotating ear cup provides hands-free, single-ear monitoring
  • 32 ohm impedance works well with low-output devices
  • 60–20 kHz frequency response provides a significant upgrade from earbuds
  • 1/8-inch (3.5mm) to 1⁄4-inch (6.3mm) adapter included for compatibility with all equipment
  • Leatherette ear cups provide a comfortable, custom fit

“The idea of wireless headphones that give the DJ great freedom of movement during his gig is very compelling. The Numark HF Wireless really delivers, unlike many other wireless devices that seem to fall short of what they promise,” said Chris Roman, Product Manager for Numark. “Add to its great wireless performance its truly outstanding audio quality, long-lasting battery and its adaptability to different situations and the HF Wireless is the ideal headphone solution for the active DJ.”

The HF Wireless headphone will retail with an MSRP of £49.99 and will be exhibited at Winter NAMM, January 22-25, Booth 6700 in Anaheim, CA.

Dan’s impressions

As DJs, the reality is that we’re using headphones for far more than just mixing these days. From digging for tunes, to watching Netflix or listening to Soundcloud, one set is far more practical than having a pair for every different task. There’ll always be a market for the premium flagship cans like the (just announced) Pioneer HDJ-2000 MK2s, but even the trusty Sennheiser HD-25s are extremely versatile thanks their durability. The wireless connectivity and NFC just make them a bit more useful day to day.

The Numark HF Wireless should be around £50 when they come out.

What do you think of sticking Bluetooth in DJ headphones? Do you take your DJ cans for everyday use?
