Trade show time invariably means that inMusic will push out a flurry of embargoed PR announcing mountains of new toys for DJs and producers. Their Musikmesse stand this year however felt more like a picnic table than previous sprawling constructions, but still showed off at least one new piece that you lot would be interested in. The Akai Pro MIDImix is a diminutive box of controls aimed a making a little more sense of Ableton Live.

Fewer words than normal from the inMusic PR machine:

Innovative unit gives musicians/producers unequalled ability to mix sounds and control their Digital Audio Workstation on the go from a compact, easy-to-use component

Ash Vale, UK (April 15, 2015)—Akai Professional (akaipro.com), a leading manufacturer of keyboards, mixers and production equipment for performers and recording artists, today announced the introduction of it’s new MIDImix, an ultra-portable high-performance MIDI-mixer that provides users with an innovative, feature-packed solution for Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) mixer control.

Until now, musicians and producers had to build and layer their mixes at the performance site first, then transfer that mix at a later time to their DAW for post-mix processing and manipulation. It was an unwieldy process and because of the time lag between constructing the initial mix and not being able to work on it until later in their DAW, artists had only a limited ability to create the exact mix they wanted in real time.

Akai Professional’s portable MIDImix solves that dilemma completely. With Akai Professional’s famous build quality and cutting-edge engineering, it combines the intuitive layout of a traditional mixer with 8 individual line faders and a master fader, 24 control knobs arranged 3 per channel and 1 to 1 mapping with Ableton Live (Ableton Live Lite is included). Users can send all the mixer’s settings to their DAW with a single press of a button, for unprecedented management and precise control over their DAW’s functionality. This means that artists can mix and modify/manipulate their projects concurrently in real time, giving them a much wider array of creative options as a result of the far greater creative flexibility afforded by MIDImix.

A recap of MIDImix features:

  • Midi mixer to control virtually any DAW
  • 8 individual line faders, 1 master fader
  • 24 knobs, arranged 3 per channel
  • 8 buttons arranged in 2 banks provide mute, solo and record arm functionality per channel
  • Sends all mixer settings to the DAW with a single button press
  • 1 to 1 mapping with Ableton Live (Ableton Live Lite included)

Akai Professional Product Manager Dan Gill said, “We are particularly excited to introduce the MIDImix, because up until now, there was just no solution for musicians and producers who needed a compact, easily-portable way to mix and process their projects on site.” He added, “Simply put, this is the best solution for portable mixing on the go. MIDImix offers an intuitive, familiar mixer layout, solid connectivity with the most popular DAWs, and legendary Akai Professional quality. MIDImix is exactly what people have been asking for.”

The Akai Professional MIDImix will be available in June 2015 with an MSRP of £59.99.

It’s a small controller, designed to sit in front of Ableton Live (Lite is suppled with the MIDImix) to make producing music a little bit easier. It can be daunting for a beginner to get to grips with Live’s workflow, and a cost-effective lump of hardware makes a lot more sense of it. It also makes for a very lightweight mixer for producers on the road.

Of course, as a mappable controller, the world of DJ software opens right up, and the MIDImix could easily be mapped to be a multi-purpose controller for DJs.

The price is excellent — £60, and it’ll sit very nicely alongside the existing AMX and AFX controllers. Good work Akai Pro.
