A long standing tradition in the UK’s DJ scene has been Gemini’s DJ Competition. Once a part of their PLASA offering (when PLASA had anything to do with DJing that is), it has now moved to the very wonderful BPM Show 2012.
I’ve always like this because it’s been open – any style or gear rather than turntablism on Technics. And given the technology melting pot that is the DJ scene, it’ll be cool to see an iPad pitched against a full setup.
An online public vote will decide on who gets to perform at the show, and then a handful of heats will decide the winner. It’s all laid out in detail below. Good luck to everyone who enters!
The rules – read and obey:
The Gemini Freestyle DJ Competition will return to BPM in 2012 for a third consecutive year, once again providing an opportunity for DJs to compete against each other for recognition, exposure and equipment prizes. The live stage of the competition will take place on Saturday 6th October and it is open to all DJs aged 16 and above, playing any style of music and using any playback technology.
For the 2012 competition, Gemini has again put some excellent prizes up for grabs. The 2012 Freestyle DJ of the year will take home one of Gemini’s brand new flagship CDMP-7000 Professional Media Workstations, together with a pair of DJX-05 Professional DJ Headphones, a prize worth almost £1000! The CDMP-7000, which will make its UK debut on the BPM exhibition floor, offers modern DJs a complete all-in-one solution packed with features and outstanding playback versatility. With two feature-rich decks and a comprehensive central mixer section, this inclusive unit provides everything you need to electrify a crowd in any venue. The winner will also receive lots exposure and promotion from BPM and Gemini as well as a Main Stage set at BPM 2013.
The DJ who comes in at second place will take home a fantastic Gemini CNTRL-7 USB MIDI DJ Controller as well as a pair of DJX-05 Professional DJ Headphones!
The other two finalists will also be given a pair of Gemini DJX-07 Headphones, and every other DJ who participates in the live heats will take home a pair of Gemini DJX-05 Headphones.
The main competition will take place on stage in the BPM Arena beginning with sixteen contestants competing in four heats to impress a panel of industry experts. During the heats each DJ will have just five minutes to show what they can do behind the decks, before the judges choose a winner to go through to the final. The judges will base their decision on technical ability, music selection and crowd interaction. At the end of the day the grand final will take place on the main stage, with each finalist performing another five minute showcase mix. The judges will then select a runner up and the winner who will become the Gemini Freestyle DJ of the Year 2012!
There are two ways to enter the competition, make it to the final sixteen and compete in the live heats:
1) Online Voting
Twelve of the places in the heats will be decided prior to the show. To enter you must record a video or audio mix and upload it to a sharing site that supports embedding such as SoundCloud or YouTube. The next step is to fill in the registration form at www.visitbpm.co.uk/enter/. It will then be down to the public to vote for their favourite mix and the twelve entrants with the highest number of votes will progress to the live heats. The online voting will run from Friday 31st August to Friday 28th September (4 weeks). You’ll be able to enter at any time, so the earlier you submit your mix, the more chance you have of getting through!
2) Live Audition
Don’t worry if you fall outside the top twelve after the public vote, as there will be another chance to make it in to the live heats. The remaining four places will be decided on the day of the competition at the Gemini Stand (A15) from 11am to 12:30pm. Simply turn up, show off your skills, and, if the Gemini team like what they see, you could make it in to the final as one of their four wildcard DJs. This opportunity will be open to any DJ (aged 16 or over) attending BPM, including those who were unsuccessful in the online voting. However, there will be a very limited amount of time for each entrant to show what they can do, and the decision of the Gemini staff will be final.
